Raster vs vector: what matters for signs, apparel, print, and websites

Use vector artwork for logos, lettering, icons, and shapes that must scale or be fabricated. Use raster images for photographs, textures, and pixel-based artwork. The right choice depends on what the image contains and how it will be produced, not merely whether the final use is print or digital.

A vector logo can become a business card or a building sign without losing edge quality. A photograph cannot be converted into meaningful vector detail just by saving it as an SVG. It needs enough pixels for its final physical size.

The practical difference

Raster images are grids of colored pixels. JPEG, PNG, TIFF, and WebP are common raster formats. Their available detail is fixed by their pixel dimensions. When enlarged too far, edges soften and individual pixels become visible.

Vector artwork describes lines, curves, fills, and shapes mathematically. SVG, AI, and EPS are common vector formats, and PDF can contain vector artwork. Vectors can scale cleanly because the output device redraws the shapes at the requested size.

Neither format is universally better. A crisp logo is naturally vector. A product photograph is naturally raster. Many finished layouts contain both.

Signs

Sign production often depends on vector paths. Cut vinyl, routed panels, channel letters, engraving, and CNC processes need clean shapes that a machine can follow. A low-resolution logo forces the sign shop to redraw or trace it before production.

Large-format printed signs and banners can include raster photography, but the file still needs enough effective resolution at final size. Viewing distance matters. A highway billboard can use lower pixel density than a menu board viewed from a few feet away.

Do not judge a sign file only on a laptop screen. Confirm the final dimensions, expected viewing distance, production method, bleed, safe area, and color requirements with the fabricator.

Apparel

Screen printing works best with clean separations and intentional spot colors. Vector artwork is usually the best starting point for logos and type.

Embroidery is different. The artwork must be digitized into stitch instructions. Tiny text, thin lines, tight gaps, and subtle gradients may not survive. A vector file helps the digitizer start with clean geometry, but it does not eliminate the need to adapt the mark for thread and fabric.

Direct-to-garment and transfer methods can reproduce raster detail, including photographs, but resolution, transparency, garment color, and print method still affect the result.

Print

Business cards, brochures, packaging, and posters often combine vector text and logos with raster photographs. Keep type and logos as vector where possible. Supply photographs with enough resolution at their placed size.

Pixels per inch is a useful measure for raster print files. A photo that is 3000 pixels wide can produce roughly 10 inches at 300 pixels per inch. The same image stretched to 30 inches provides only about 100 pixels per inch. Whether that is acceptable depends on the output and viewing distance.

Color is a separate issue from file type. Raster and vector files can both use incorrect color settings. Ask the printer about CMYK conversion, spot colors, profiles, rich black, overprint, and proofing requirements when color accuracy matters.

Websites

SVG is usually a strong choice for logos and simple icons because it stays sharp on high-density screens and can be small when prepared well. SVG files should be exported cleanly and treated as active web assets, not as a place to hide unnecessary editor data or scripts.

Raster formats remain appropriate for photographs and complex imagery. Modern formats such as WebP or AVIF can reduce file size, while JPEG and PNG remain useful compatibility formats. Serve images close to the displayed dimensions and use responsive image techniques rather than sending one oversized source to every device.

Do not use vector merely because it scales. A highly complex illustration can produce an SVG that is larger and slower than an optimized raster image.

Common failure modes

Renaming or wrapping a raster file

Putting a JPEG inside a PDF, AI, or SVG file does not make it vector. The underlying image still has the same pixels.

Using screen dimensions for print

An image can look sharp at 800 pixels wide on a screen and still be inadequate for a large printed piece.

Automatic tracing without cleanup

Image tracing can create too many anchor points, uneven curves, closed gaps, and distorted letters. It may be a starting point, not a finished production file.

Ignoring the production method

Fine gradients may work in a photo print but fail in cut vinyl. Tiny gaps may fill in during embroidery. Hairline strokes may disappear in screen printing.

Assuming all PDFs are production-ready

A PDF can contain low-resolution images, missing bleeds, incorrect colors, live fonts, or an unsuitable page size. The container does not guarantee the contents.

A decision framework

Ask these questions before choosing or approving a file:

  1. Is the artwork made of shapes and type, or is it photographic?
  2. What are the final physical or on-screen dimensions?
  3. How close will the audience be when viewing it?
  4. Will the output be printed, cut, routed, engraved, stitched, or displayed on a screen?
  5. Does the producer require vector paths, spot colors, separations, bleed, or a specific profile?
  6. If raster is appropriate, what is the effective resolution at final size?
  7. Has the actual vendor inspected the file before the deadline?

For important work, request a proof or sample. A technically valid file can still produce a poor result because materials, inks, thread, finishing, lighting, and installation all affect the outcome.

When professional help is warranted

Use a designer or production specialist when artwork must be rebuilt, when the output is unusually large or expensive, when brand colors must match across materials, or when the production process imposes limits you do not understand.

The vendor making the item should have the final word on production specifications. The designer should protect the identity. Those are related roles, but they are not always the same job.

Keep vector masters for logos and shape-based brand assets, and keep full-resolution raster originals for photography. Choose the delivery file after you know the production method and final size.

The safest question is not, "Is this high resolution?" Ask, "Is this the right source artwork for this exact output, and has the producer checked it?"
